August 13, 2019
Red Bull Racing has announced that Toro Rosso debutant driver Alexander Albon will be replacing Pierre Gasly from Belgium GP onwards. Albon will now be sharing space with his new teammate Max Verstappen, while, Gasly will be driving for Toro Rosso for the rest of the season. The decision to swap the two members into different teams was made after disappointing first half of the F1 2019 performance by Gasly. While Vestappen was going head to head for top 3 positions, Gasly failed to maintain his teammate’s support. While Verstappen stands 3rd overall in the drivers’ championship, with 181 points and two race wins, Gasly has just 63 points to his name this season. Albon who is new to the F1 championship as moved up after qualifying 2nd last year’s FIA Formula 2 championship and currently has a total of 16 points.
A statement released by the team says, “Red Bull are in the unique position of having four talented Formula One drivers under contract who can be rotated between the Team and Toro Rosso. The Team will use the next nine races to evaluate Alex’s performance in order to make an informed decision as to who will drive alongside Max in 2020.”
